About the Item

"The Truth about Comedy" is a 20 x 16 x .25 inch abstract acrylic painting on canvas board by Sandra Cohen. Organic shapes, some sharply defined and others more ghostlike, are suspended in a misty, semi-translucent space. These bodies – resembling stones, or perhaps cells – descend through an atmospheric space to land at bottom in a black and white area embedded with bits of bar code. Dominant hues are cool blues, teals, and greens, with accents of ochre, rust, and purple. The artist employs dripping, scratching, and layering; some areas are smooth and blended, while others are rough or marked with scribbles, thread-like lines, and gestural marks. The interplay of soft diffusion and harsher textures evokes a quiet hidden turbulence. English novelist Thomas Hardy said "All comedy, is tragedy, if you only look deep enough into it." The darker bottom edge and the black forms grounding the composition suggest a fundament of emotional weight beneath the otherwise airy environment. This painting is signed on the back. Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.
