The son of a Lyonnais dyer, he honed his craft at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon under instructors such as Joseph Guichard before moving to Paris to study with Antoine V ollon, a master of rich still life and tonal realism. From his earliest exhibitions, beginning with a local Salon presentation in 1867, Perret demonstrated a keen eye for atmospheric landscapes and vividly observed rural life. He went on to exhibit regularly at the Paris Salon from 1869 onward, gaining recognition for his skill in balancing traditional academic technique with a growing interest in everyday subjects drawn from the French countryside. Throughout his career, Perret’s work traversed genres: embracing portraits, genre scenes, landscapes, and still lifes with equal dedication. While firmly grounded in realist values, his paintings often convey a lyrical warmth, celebrating rural life and the natural world with clarity and dignity. His repeated participation in the Société des artistes français and later the Société nationale des beaux-arts, along with honors such as a bronze medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle and his appointment as a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur, attest to both his technical mastery and his esteem among contemporaries. Unlike some of the harsher depictions of peasant hardship common in Realist art, Perret’s vision frequently reflected a gentler, more humane view of agrarian life.
