About the Item

Ekaterina was born and raised in Sochi, a southern city where light shapes everyday life. Bright sun, deep shadows of trees, and the saturated colors of fruit and plants formed her early visual perception. The strong contrasts of southern light later became a defining influence in her painting. Memories of this atmosphere continue to resonate in her work. Pomegranates, mandarins, sunlight, and soft shadows appear as recurring sensations within her paintings. These elements are not always depicted literally, but remain present through color, rhythm, and the overall presence of light within the composition. For the artist, the experience of light itself often becomes more significant than the object being portrayed. Ekaterina studied at the Academy of Architecture and Arts, where the program emphasized the exploration of rhythm, decorative structure, and the plasticity of form rather than traditional academic painting. This approach shaped her understanding of composition as a living structure in which balance, movement, and color relationships create the internal rhythm of the image. Her paintings often begin with quiet observations of everyday moments — morning light in a room, still interiors, fruit on a table, plants, or fragments of nature. These scenes serve less as literal depictions and more as points of departure for creating atmosphere. Ekaterina’s work moves between recognizable imagery and a more intuitive interpretation of form. Color plays a central role in shaping the emotional space of the painting, while contrasts of light and shadow introduce a sense of movement and quiet presence. Ekaterina is a member of the Union of Artists and regularly participates in exhibitions. Her works are held in private collections. She currently lives and works in Canada, where she continues to explore themes of light, memory, and the quiet poetry of everyday observation.

Stewart received a degree in Art History and Anthropology from the University of Tennessee in 1974. A number of years of study at New York's Art Students League followed, beginning in 1978. Seven Apples: abstract still life interior painting, red apples on green & gray

Seven Apples: abstract still life interior painting, red apples on green & gray

By Mat Tomezsko

Located in Bryn Mawr, PA

This is an original sill life interior painting of fruit (apples) with a geometric fractured composition. The artist made the painting one section at a time. When working on one section, the artist would block off the rest of the composition so the objects and background needed to be placed again. By building the composition this way, the background and table appear at different levels and the shapes don't quite align. These imperfections convey a sense of passing time. In each section, the tone of the light changes, and the shadows switch directions. The apples and geometric shapes were chosen as much for metaphorical value as for aesthetics. A seemingly simple arrangement in a familiar painting genre contains a depth of observation, artistic choices, and interpretation. This painting is signed and dated on the back. Includes all hanging hardware and ready to install; no need for additional framing. Mat...
