About the Item

Tomatoes by Ethelinda 32x50" Image Size, Gallery Wrapped Oil on Canvas, Signed lower left Expressionistic Still Life. The Artist, Ethelinda, is celebrated for taking real-world subjects and transforming them through bold brushwork and saturated color palettes into "grander versions of themselves". In 1998, after moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Ethelinda expanded her artistic portfolio beyond her well-known Native American portraits and dynamic horse paintings to begin a series of large-scale fruit and vegetable still lifes. This specific piece captures a vibrant bowl of ripe heirloom tomatoes, showcasing her signature thick paint application, deep lighting, and intense warmth. This is a secondary market item from a prominent US collector - in excellent condition, obtained from the artist when the collector lived in Santa Fe, NM. About the Artist: A powerful presence pervades all of Ethelinda’s work. She creates dynamic paintings that accentuate life, depicting real things – horses, dogs, fruits, flowers, Indian peoples – and through her vision transforms them into grander versions of themselves. Her horses race toward the viewer, free and unfettered, almost larger than life. Her Indians are detailed and authentic. Her fruit and flower still lifes are bold and colorful. Ethelinda lives and has her studio in New Mexico. Ethelinda was born in Hawaii to an artistic family. Her mother, also an artist, studied with Nicolai Fechin and influenced Ethelinda's love of painting. She says, "I have always painted, first sketching the characters of the books my grandmother read to me as a child." Ethelinda studied art and English literature in college and went on to learn French in Switzerland. She traveled extensively, spending time in New York before settling in New Mexico. Ethelinda says, "Perhaps this is why my artwork is so diverse. I paint what is around me - right now, in New Mexico, it is horses. The most important aspect to me is to see subject matter and paint them in a manner in which they are not painted elsewhere." Charlotte Berny in Focus/Santa Fe writes, "Ethelinda's vision transforms her subjects. She begins with things that are real - horses, Indians, fruits, flower - and then through some alchemy, recreates them as grander versions of themselves." Her work is publicly displayed at the Booth Museum in Atlanta, Georgia and the Nelson Museum in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Harvest Still Life by Lu Haskew Oil 18x25" image size, 24x31" framed Still Life of an abundant vegetable garden harvest with onions, eggplant, cabbage and tomato ABOUT THE ARTIST: Lu Haskew 1921-2009 "Life is good to me. Being able to go to my studio five days weekly and paint for several hours, living in a supportive community, having family and friends who encourage me--all have contributed to helping me become an artist. Being fortunate to study with some of the artists I admire has kept me painting from the garden, people and my favorite things. With the support of galleries, teaching and doing demos, how could I do anything else? My goal is to try to be the best I can be by always being a student, looking for new ideas and stretching my horizons." Upon retirement from a 33-year teaching career, Lu rented a studio in Loveland and began concentrating on her oil and watercolor painting. Learning from artists she had followed and admired throughout the years her painting became a full time career. Since 1992, she has studied with renowned painters Richard Schmid, Clyde Aspevig, Joyce Pike, and others at the Scottsdale Art...
