'Midnight Roses' Acrylic and plaster paste on canvas 71x91 cm First the canvas is primed with gesso, and several layers of the base coat are applied. When I am satisfied that there is enough depth to the colour, I start to sculpt the actual roses onto the painted canvas using a flexible plaster paste. There are nights when the air doesn’t move. Heat sits low over everything, and whatever the gardens are releasing — rose, something greener, something almost like tea — stops separating into individual scents. It becomes one thick, wordless presence in the dark. Smoked Rose was painted during a heatwave, in a week when the temperature never really dropped, even after midnight.
