About the Item

Maurice Asselin (1882-1947) Les Anémones, a bouquet of anemones signed upper right oil on canvas 38 x 46 cm Label of the exhibition Maurice Asselin at the Galerie Schmit in february-march 1970 on the stretcher Framed : 48 x 56 cm This beautiful painting therefore appeared in the retrospective devoted to Maurice Asselin by the famous Schmit gallery in 1970, it is reproduced in the catalog published on the occasion.(see the photograph in black and white please). The colors and the fairly ample composition stand out from other bouquets painted by the artist, more often depicted in a vertical format. The quality of light and color are also remarkable. Maurice Asselin (1882–1947) He was a french painter, watercolourist and printmaker born in Orléans, trained under Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Associated with the School of Paris, he was best known for still lifes, nudes, and Breton landscapes He painted in a restrained, sober palette influenced by Cézanne. A close friend of Walter Sickert in London (1914–16) and of writer Pierre Mac Orlan, he was commissioned as a war artist for the Musée de l’Armée in 1917 and made Officier de la Légion d’honneur in 1939. He died in Paris in 1947. Major museum collections • Musée National d’Art Moderne (Centre Pompidou), Paris • Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pont-Aven • Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston • LACMA • Brooklyn Museum / MoMA, New York • British Museum, London • National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen We must quote Maurice Asselin, who said, “If you truly love painting, you will not ask it merely to be decoration for the walls of your home, but first and foremost to be nourishment for your inner life. No combination of minds, no theory, can give birth to a work of art...”. Art springs from a sense of wonder and love for life.”Asselin
