About the Item

Two Delphiniums is a work from the series Drinking Sorrow in a Cup of Love, the first painting series by Sharon Brill. The name of the series has been taken from a song written by Israeli singer-songwriter Yosi Banai. This works represents two blue-violet delphinium flowers drawn with oil pastels and pencils on sheets of red sandpaper that have been glued together. The artwork will be sold framed. The price includes the frame, but the specified dimensions do not include the frame (please contact us for more information). Following a period marked by difficult personal and geopolitical events, the artist felt compelled to explore a new medium and technique for a fresh series, while continuing her work in ceramics. Through depictions of flowers in various stages of wilting and decay, she offers a powerful meditation on cycles of life, emotional maturation, and the evolving experience of femininity. For this series, Sharon Brill draws enlarged images of flowers to scale with the human body on sheets of coloured sandpaper —an abrasive, labor‑intensive material more commonly associated with manual work than with painting. As the pigment meets the rough surface, the sandpaper “wounds” both the paint and the artist’s hands, embedding the physicality of the process into the work itself and giving the “animated” flowers another narrative layer of states of matter and spirit. The series reflects the artist’s intuitive encounters with flowers found in gardens, nurseries, and domestic spaces. She observes their postures as if reading a body in motion, responding to the emotions they evoke—sometimes a fleeting sensation, sometimes a memory resurfacing. Light becomes a narrative tool, isolating and amplifying the story each flower seems to tell.

Flowers on Tuesday - Abstract Botanical Textured Still Life Thick Oil Painting

Flowers on Tuesday - Abstract Botanical Textured Still Life Thick Oil Painting

By Sally West

Located in Los Angeles, CA

What makes Sally West’s original oil paintings so recognizable is the combination of texture, abstraction, and calming colors. The movement of her paint strokes on canvas is reminiscent of a light breeze or waves. Each painting is completed in one day. West's textural pieces take at least eight weeks to completely dry. Once dry the thick paint takes on an almost sculptural effect. Overall, West’s color palette is uniquely her own and it conveys a very specific feeling of comfort associated with familiarity and softness. • One-of-a-kind original textural oil painting on canvas measuring 36 inches square • Sides are painted; framing is not required • Wired and ready to hang • Signed by the artist on the front and back • Certificate of authenticity issued by Artplex Gallery is included • Convenient local Los Angeles area delivery • Affordable U.S. and international shipping available Sally West was born in West Wyalong, Central New South Wales. West grew up on a farm and as a teenager moved to Eastern Sydney for school. Throughout her life, she has traveled through and lived in both Europe and South East Asia to gain inspiration for her artwork. Although her international journeys have influenced her style, the subjects of her paintings are very close to home. The subjects of all of her paintings exist in an infinite timeline inspired by her location in Eastern Australia. Since West’s first breakthrough solo exhibition in New York in 2011, her artworks have become highly sought after internationally. She has won and placed as a finalist in numerous worldwide art competitions and juried exhibitions throughout her career. Her artworks are exhibited in influential galleries across Australia and the USA and are included in significant art collections around the globe. Artplex Gallery has been representing and exhibiting Sally West's original artworks in Los Angeles since 2018, presenting her impressive works to an international collector base around the globe.
