About the Item

Gorgeous cask and copper pot still life by Susan Lyons (American, 20th Century). Presented in a wooden frame. Signed "Lyons" and dated "95" lower right. Image size, 28"H x 30"W. Susan Lyon studied painting at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and was an active participant in Chicago's 100 year-old Palette and Chisel Club. It is there she first began exhibiting and selling her work; at twenty-three she was the youngest winner of the prestigious Gold Medal which she won two consecutive years in the annual Oil Painting show plus a third place in the Silver Medal Watercolor show. She entered the Oil Painters of America show once and got 7th place. In 1998 and 2000 she won an artist choice award in the Northwest Rendezvous Show. Lyon's technique is to paint wet on wet to start and then wet on dry for her finishing touches. She occasionally thins her oils with mineral spirits to obtain a balance of scratchy brush work against thick opaque strokes for the lights. Susan's mediums of choice are oil and charcoal.

Wohlgemuth, Daniel (1876-1967), a son of Johannes Wohlgemuth of Albisheim an der Pfrim and Katharina (Krehbiel) Wohlgemuth of Weierhof, was born at Albisheim 17 April 1876, but reared by his uncle Johannes Krehbiel of Weierhof, studied art at Frankfurt and Strasbourg, and finally at the Art Academy in Munich under Franz von Stuck. His travels in Italy, Palestine, and Russia contributed to his development. Still Life with Pitcher, Oil on Paper, Framed, Circa 1950s, Signed

Located in London, GB

'Still Life with Pitcher', oil on paper, by Charles Réal (circa 1950s). Still-lifes make voyeurs out of all of us. No matter the era to which they belong, they always give us the sense that we’re spying on a table set for a night of gluttony or perhaps, romance. Whatever is set on the still-life table can transport us to another place limited only by our imaginations. What is not well known is that those tabletop items often had coded meanings. The secret meanings behind the paintings and their unofficial language spawned several sub-genres, including floral still life, breakfast paintings...
