About the Item

Tony Scherman (1950 - 2023) is one of the most distinctive Canadian artists. He is renowned internationally for his work, typically executed in encaustic, a mix of wax and oil paint (one of the most difficult mediums to work in). Scherman's allusions to both history, and the history of visual art, are constants in his oeuvre. While his moody palette and sumptuous portraits (whether contemporary, historical or allegorical) reference a range of masters, his works remain visceral and contemporary. Scherman frequently alludes to the grandeur of past centuries, both in his subject matter and the technique of encaustic painting. The artist is continuing a tradition, of working with this material, that has been propelled through art history by a diverse number of canonical artists including Pieter Claesz, Caravaggio, and Cézanne. This captivating portrait depicts American civil rights activist Rosa Parks. The work is from Scherman's Difficult Women series, in which Scherman shows women of principle or determination who be described as "difficult;" A label that–as he points out–is rarely applied to men. Rich, textured layers of brushwork create a sumptuously colored composition that evokes the Old Master paintings. Many of Scherman's works from the turn of the millennium have this strikingly dark background, evocative of chiaroscuro. The series encompasses depictions of both historic and modern women, including Mary Magdalene, Simone de Bouvoir, Malala, Elizabeth I, the Last Witch of Salem, and an Unknown Suffragette, among others. Many of the haunting canvases were worked on for several years, until the artist felt he had captured his subject's essence. Scherman highlights that many of the paintings should not feel entirely finished, as the figures' stories cannot be contained. Scherman’s work can be found in nearly every public collection in Canada, as well as many international museums including LACMA (Los Angeles) and Centre Pompidou (Paris). Questions about this piece?
