About the Item

William Malherbe 1884 – 1951 French-American Painter 'Bouquet de Fleurs' Signature: Signed lower right Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Image size 62,5 x 51,5 cm, frame size 80 x 69,5 cm Notes: Between 1939 and 1948, William Malherbe resided in the United States. During this time, he created a vibrant piece inspired by the sunlight and scenery around him, using thick paint in jewel-toned colors reminiscent of Bellow’s landscapes. Starting exhibitions in Paris at 18, Malherbe explored various styles before developing his own unique style, recognized by Gustave Kahn as “particularly interesting.” He counted Renoir and Bonnard among his friends and inspirations. Biography: Malherbe William, born on December 28, 1884, was a distinguished French painter whose artistic contributions flourished within the realm of post-impressionism. His creative brilliance illuminated the modern art scene during his active years. William Malherbe started exhibiting in Paris at the age of 18 years. He studied Architecture for a year and a half at the School of Decorative Arts. He has experimented with various styles, such as Cubism, Fauvism, Post-impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, and in the end developed a purely personal style. Malherbe had among his friends and inspiration the foremost painters of this lively period in the Arts, such as Renoir and Bonnard. Between 1939 and 1948 William Malherbe stayed in the United States. It was at the mid-point of his stay that he executed this piece. Obviously he was inspired by the bright sunlight of the day and the scenic view before him. He used very thick paint in jewel-toned colours to create a pulsating surface reminiscent of Bellow’s landscapes, especially in the use of purples and brilliant greens. However, Malherbe developed a singular style of his own, unique enough to be singled out by the famous art historian, critic and poet Gustave Kahn as “a particularly interesting artist of the day”. Renowned for his evocative works, such as “The Lady with the Pink Hat,” “Still Life with Anemones,” and “The Reading,” Malherbe displayed a profound mastery of various subjects, including portraiture, still life, and captivating genre scenes. Muzéo proudly presents exquisite reproductions of William Malherbe’s celebrated artworks, capturing the essence of his artistic legacy. His enduring impact continues to resonate within the world of art and beyond.

'Roses in a Green Vase' by Hubert Glansdorff (1877 – 1963)

'Roses in a Green Vase' by Hubert Glansdorff (1877 – 1963)

Located in Knokke, BE

Hubert Glansdorff Brussels 1877 – 1963 Knokke Belgian Painter 'Roses in a Green Vase' Signature: signed lower left and dated 1941 'Glansdorff 41' Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: image size 80 x 100 cm; frame size 107 x 127 cm Biography: Hubert Glansdorff was born in Ixelles, Belgium, in 1877. He was a Belgian figurative painter whose work encompassed genre scenes, seascapes, floral still lifes, female figures, nudes, and portraits. Over the course of his career, he developed a distinctive painterly language that combined academic training with a luminous, colour-rich sensibility. From an early age, Glansdorff showed a natural inclination toward pictorial expression. The picturesque aspects of life and landscape emerged organically in his work rather than as a calculated artistic choice. His visual world was shaped by instinct as much as by study, resulting in compositions that often feel immediate and atmospheric. He initially admired the Flemish Primitives, whose influence can be felt in his attention to structure and tonal harmony. However, Glansdorff gradually evolved toward a more personal form of Luminism, characterised by warm light effects, vibrant colour, and a heightened sensitivity to atmosphere. His palette became increasingly rich and expressive, particularly in his floral compositions for which he gained considerable recognition. Glansdorff studied at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts, where he worked alongside and was influenced by artists such as Joseph Stallaert. During his formative years, he also developed friendships with contemporary artists including Joris De Bruyne, Alphonse Blomme, and Albert Alleman. He became a member of the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire de Bruxelles, an important artistic circle in the Belgian capital. In 1904, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Brussels, presenting works such as Armenian Fiddler. Later, in 1920, he participated in exhibitions at the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire, the Salle Studio, and the Salon d’Automne, alongside artists such as Pierre Abattucci, Firmin Baes...
