Trevor Waugh Forest Tapestry Original Unframed Oil Painting Oil Paint on Canvas Size: H 40.6cm (16 inches) x W 50.8cm (20 inches) Please note that in situ images are purely an indication of how a piece may look. Forest Tapestry is an original Trevor Waugh oil painting. The earth tones throughout are broken up by the highlights, giving the piece a rich texture, particularly regarding the forest floor. Trevor Waugh was born in 1952 and grew up in London. Trevor studied at The Slade School of Fine Art from 1970 -1974 (BA) under the guidance of Sir William Coldstream, Professor of The Slade at the time, Patrick George, Philip Sutton, David Hockney, Euan Uglow and Bernard Cohen. During his time at The Slade he was invited by Sir William Coldstream and Patrick George to exhibit alongside them at The Collegiate Theatre at University College, London, 1971. He was also a contributor to The Young Contemporaries Exhibition at The Royal Academy 1972. Trevor obtained a distinction for his post-graduate certificate in illustration when he studied with Ernest Jones at Croydon College of Art 1978-1979. He went on to work successfully as a freelance illustrator for nine years for most of the major publishers including Penguin, Heinemann, Cassell, Collins and the BBC. Return to Fine Art and Travel Trevor returned to fine art in 1988 and began travelling extensively in the Middle East: First visit 1995 for a month as artist in residence at The Majlis Gallery, Dubai. Several exhibitions and visits since including The New Orientalist Exhibition in The Emirates and his paintings can be found in the Royal Collections of Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. In 1995 Trevor travelled to the USA and resided there for three months to include an exhibition and watercolour classes at Cleveland State Community College, Tennessee. He was also artist in residence and held an exhibition at the River Gallery in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Trevor visited Morocco in 1977-78 resulting in an exhibition in the Uk sponsored by the Moroccan Embassy. Since 1993 Trevor has made frequent visits to Venice for inspiration, resulting in several exhibitions here in the UK, as well as Florence and Rome. France has also featured in Trevor’s travelling schedule where he ran painting holidays in Provence and the Dordogne and spent some time in the Ardeche, Giverny and Brittany. A painting trip to Oman and a painting trip to Istanbul have also featured.

Artist Comments
Artist James Hartman draws inspiration from the experience of seeing sunlit colors and details appearing through the strong vertical tree pattern. He expresses the painting sections to appear like stained glass. James highlights small areas where collaged 100-year-old paper show through the surface, he does this in a non-disruptive way. James applies heat to fuse the oils into a mixture of beeswax and damar crystals to seal the work.


About the Artist
When James Hartman was in art school, he became fascinated with the Society of Six, a group of artists who painted en plein air (outdoors) and exhibited together in the San Francisco Bay Area during the early 20th Century. James's paintings of the Northern California landscape pay tribute to some of the great Bay Area artists of the past. His expressive scenes feel alive through his vibrant use of color and his painterly brushwork. James’s paintings have an immediate visual impact from a distance, yet up close, dissolve into a series of confident marks and strokes. There is a simultaneous complexity and steadiness in his flattened, color-blocked planes. Knowledge and observation are essential elements of James’s working practice. To this end, he spends a large proportion of his time painting on location. His body of work captures the fresh and sunlit essence of the coastal California hills.
