About the Item

From 1976 until his death in 1987, Andy Warhol was rarely without a camera. Photography was fundamental both to his artistic practice and his engagement with the world around him. Though long devoted to Polaroids, Warhol acquired a 35mm camera in 1977 and proceeded to shoot, on average, at least a roll of film a day over the following decade. Little escaped his lens: he recorded discos, dinner parties, flea markets, wrestling matches, street scenes, and the social rituals that defined downtown New York in the late 20th century. Friends, lovers, celebrities, socialites, business associates, and anonymous passersby all became subjects within Warhol’s restless photographic archive. While Warhol’s large-scale portraits established his reputation as one of Pop Art’s most celebrated image-makers and colourists, black and white snapshots reveal a more immediate and intimate sensibility. Of the tens of thousands of images Warhol produced between 1977 and 1987, only a small fraction were ever enlarged, lending these works the feeling of an expansive personal diary — spontaneous records of glamour, performance, labour, and everyday life collapsing into a single frame. This image shows Elizabeth Taylor's handprints in the courtyard of the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Warhol's long documented fascination with classic Hollywood figures and celebrity culture began from an early age. He also produced screenprints of some handprints, using these photographs as source material. Questions about this piece? Contact us.
