About the Item

Signed by the photographer on the recto In the 1960s, Bert Stern was VOGUE’s superstar photographer with a contract to shoot one hundred fashion pages per year – and he was also given carte-blanch to produce 10 pages of whatever he wanted to do. Stern chose Marilyn. When she arrived at the hotel, Stern assumed that she would allot very little time to the shoot. Instead, Marilyn stayed for over 10 hours and even allowed Stern to shoot nudes of her, minimally covered with sheer scarves. When VOGUE saw the pictures, they commissioned an additional 3-day shoot – but this time, with a professional hairdresser and veteran fashion editor Babs Simpson – and more actual clothes. Shortly after, Marilyn asked to see the pictures and Stern mailed them to her. (The pictures from the second shoot were not developed yet, so Stern sent over many of the nudes from the first shoot, realizing that VOGUE was unlikely to publish them anyway.). When they were returned to him, Stern discovered that she had crossed out many of the images with a red marker, and in some cases even used a pin to scratch through and destroy the image. When Marilyn died 2 weeks later, VOGUE’s issue with 8 pages of the photographs was just about to be printed. The magazine decided to run the pictures exactly as they had originally intended but with different text to memorialize the occasion of this “last sitting”. The editorial opens with Marilyn somber and thoughtful in an elegant black Christian Dior dress and ends with her in the twinkling lights of diamonds, laughing and looking upwards.
