About the Work
In EROS, Guido Argentini (b. 1966) pairs the female form with landscape and still life, a red dress against velvet theater seats, blue eyes against open sky, in diptychs that suggest more than they reveal. Shot between Italian palaces, Tokyo streets, and the Arizona desert, each pairing reads like a still from a film never shown in full. The story stays unfinished. That's the point.
Guido Argentini expands his vision of eroticism beyond the singular beauty of the female form, weaving a poetic dialogue between desire and place, body and memory. This evocative series of diptychs pairs intimate portraits of women with landscapes and still lifes, composing a silent symphony of longing, color, and cinematic allure.
Argentini's women are dreamers and muses, captured in moments of solitude, sensuality, and contemplation. Their presence echoes across time and space: a crimson dress mirroring the plush velvet of an empty Italian theater, sapphire eyes meeting the vast blue of an open sky, a lone figure lost in the neon glow of Tokyo's electric night. These juxtapositions create suggestive, open-ended narratives, inviting the viewer to step into a world where imagination completes the story.
From the grandeur of antique Italian palaces to the stark isolation of Arizona's desert, EROS is a journey through emotion and geography, a visual meditation on the eternal dialogue between eroticism and art. Like a single frame from an unseen film, each diptych leaves the story unfinished, an intimate secret between subject and spectator, awaiting interpretation.
Rich in mystery, color, and cinematic depth, EROS is a testament to Argentini's mastery: an invitation to dream, and a celebration of the enduring power of feminine presence in art.
About the Artist
Italian-born, Rio, Florence and Los Angeles-based photographer Guido Argentini (b. 1966) is best known for his erotic photographs of female nudes, having published several books on the subject. In EROS, his latest volume, Argentini broadens the scope of his idea of eroticism in photography, presenting a series of diptychs that combine oneiric images of women with landscapes and still life, a woman's vibrant blue eyes rhyming with the blue of the sky, a woman's red dress echoing the red velvet seats of an old Italian theater. Traveling from antique palaces in Italy to Tokyo's urban landscapes and the deserts of Arizona, the resulting images are suggestive and emotionally charged, inviting viewers to imagine their own narratives.
