Hideoki, Swan, Black & White, Hokkaido 1978, Platinum Print, First Edition Photos of Hideoki™ are being sold for the first time in 2019. This photo is a part of MoMA's permanent photo collection since 1978. It was first acquired by Barbara Jakobson, former MoMA board trustee. The Swan was featured in MoMA's 2012 calendar and exhibited at the Nikon Gallery, Tokyo, Japan in 1978. The Swan is a part of Hideoki's Hokkaido 1978 photo series. He traveled in the countrysides of Japan, including Hokkaido, Shimokita and Kiso Valley in 1977. In the shivering winter, he traveled with his Volkswagen van shipped from America. Many early mornings, he woke up in the natural beauty and mystery of nature. He captured many magical moments behind his camera lens, until the sun came down and again when it rose the next day. Hideoki was born in 1942 in the mountains of Nagano in Suwa City, Japan. When he was 18 years old, Hideoki took his first photographs at a fishing village using a Rolleiflex. His views of people, nature and the world have changed since. Photography became a medium of his self expression, rich with the pangs of his past from post-war Japan, his bicultural experiences and constant search for inner peace, as well as his relationships with people closest to him. Hideoki moved to New York City in 1963 when fashion editorial was at its height of transformation. Hideoki received commissions from Harper’s Bazaar, New York Times Magazine amongst other publications and worked in London and Paris in the late '60s. In 1975, Hideoki returned to Japan and deepened his passion for photography. His accomplishments were well received and was invited to exhibit for Nikon in 1978 and later on for Konica in 1980. He traveled around the globe and took series of photos in black and white, with themes of wild life, landscape, still and family life, and fashion. He is most inspired by the beauty of the mountains and invigorated each time he conquered the mountaintops. Amidst constant self-inquiry, he finds beauty and solace in his monochromatic prints. As Hideoki puts it, “Black to white and all the gray tones, that’s all that counts. That makes beauty.” Prints are done on the neutral PH, all cotton paper crafted to the highest museum conservation standards by Arches Papers, France. *Print to order This piece shall be signed, titled, and dated.
