About the Item

By The Erectheum is a gelatin silver print from On the Acropolis, a portfolio of 25 photographs by Tod Papageorge made on the Athenian Acropolis in the summers of 1983 and 1984. The image depicts two figures sitting huddled at the base of a fallen column drum in an excavated area, the entire upper portion of the frame consumed by the dense steel scaffolding encasing the Parthenon — a grid of pipe and planking that reduces the ancient structure behind it to a ghostly outline. Signed, titled, numbered and dated in pencil on verso.
