About the Item

Betina Samaia (b. 1964, São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian photographer whose work explores the porous boundary between reality and imagination. Holding a degree in Psychology from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP, 1988), Samaia has long been interested in the visual expression of the unconscious, developing a photographic practice that transforms observation into poetic and psychological inquiry. Her images are distinguished by an atmospheric language that dissolves clear contours in favor of ambiguity, memory, and sensation. Drawing inspiration from Impressionist painting, Samaia embraces softness, luminosity, and chromatic subtlety to create photographs that resist literal representation, inviting viewers to complete the image through their own imagination. Photography, in her practice, becomes a space where the visible and the invisible, the tangible and the imagined, coexist. Samaia's visual research unfolds within a dreamlike, almost surreal atmosphere, where light functions as both subject and metaphor. A recurring presence of luminous sources and the predominance of blue evoke ethereal landscapes inhabited by stars, forests, cities, and figures that seem to emit their own inner radiance. These motifs articulate a deeply personal cosmology, one that seeks transcendence through the photographic image while expanding the emotional and perceptual experience of the viewer. Her celebrated series and artist's books, including Noturnos, Amazônia, and Noite Afora / Noite Adentro, exemplify this sustained investigation into light, landscape, and the metaphysical dimensions of nature. A tireless traveler, Samaia renews the tradition of the nineteenth-century itinerant photographer, approaching distant territories with a sense of wonder while reimagining the sublime and the exotic through a distinctly contemporary and lyrical perspective. Through an intuitive yet rigorously developed practice, Betina Samaia has established a singular place in contemporary Brazilian photography, creating images that invite contemplation and reveal the fragile threshold between the external world and the landscapes of the imagination.
