About the Item

Archival Pigment Print - Unframed - Ask us for custom framing options. Signed by the artist 55 x 44 inches – edition of 10 Extinction Nocturne newest series by David Burdeny. This series by David Burdeny spans two decades of photographic work, bringing together fragments of travel, early architectural studies, and a sustained engagement with nocturnal environments across Japan and France. Emerging from both personal archives and quiet field experiments, the images reflect a practice grounded in observation, where the act of moving through space becomes inseparable from the act of seeing. The night works from Japan return to methods first developed during Burdeny’s architectural training in the late 1990s, when images were made after hours as exercises in structure and perception. In cities such as Tokyo, where movement eventually subsides, urban density gives way to an unexpected stillness, light and shadow reorganize the city into layered fields of attention, and scale becomes intimate rather than monumental. The France series extends this inquiry through a slower traversal of rural and coastal territories, shaped by conditions of reduced illumination and intermittent darkness. Within this shifting visibility, light appears and disappears with human presence, producing fleeting constellations of attention. Across the entire body of work, Burdeny constructs a poetics of slowness, images that privilege duration over destination, and situate looking itself as a sustained, contemplative act.
