Marilyn Monroe 1961 portrait by Douglas Kirkland Douglas Kirkland (1934-2022) was one of the most influential photographers of his generation, emerging during the golden age of 1960s-70s photojournalism through his work at Look and Life magazines, where his assignments ranged from intemational essays in Greece, Lebanon, and Japan to iconic fashion and celebrity portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor. and Marlene Dietrich. Over a career spanning six decades, Kirkland photographed on the sets of more than 100 motion pictures, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Sound of Music, Out of Africa, Titanic, Moulin Rouge!, Australia. and Baz Luhmmann’s The Great Gatsby: Kirkland’s fine art photography has been exhibited worldwide and is held in major permanent collections including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Smithsonian, the National Portrait Galleries in London and Canberra, the George Eastman Museum, and the Annenberg Space for Photography.
