About the Item

Bathers on the beach at Bagni da Maria, Marina Piccola, Capri, 1968. Marina Piccola, Capri (Bagni da Maria, 1968) 1968, printed later C-Type Print Estate-stamped and hand-numbered in ink on the recto. Edition of 150, pooled across all sizes — not 150 per size. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity directly from the Slim Aarons Estate. Complimentary worldwide shipping and framing options available. This estate-authorized print was produced from a high-resolution scan of the original archive transparency. The Lambda chromogenic process offers saturated color, smooth tonal gradation, and the distinctive warmth associated with Aarons' midcentury color photography. IFAC Arts presents the entire Slim Aarons Collection in partnership with Getty Images. Bagni da Maria occupied a red building set directly against the rock at the eastern end of Marina Piccola, its name and the words Ristorante Bar painted on a white panel above the beach. It was one of a line of family-run bathing establishments along the bay, each with its own terrace, cabins, and kitchen, that turned Capri's southern shore into the island's principal gathering place through the middle decades of the twentieth century. Marina Piccola faces directly out toward the Faraglioni, the three limestone stacks that rise from the sea offshore, and is sheltered from the north wind by the bulk of Monte Solaro behind. Aarons photographed the same establishment in 1958 and returned a decade later, and the two pictures together record how quickly the Mediterranean summer changed: the wooden boats and canvas parasols of the first are still present in the second, but they share the beach with inflatable rafts, air mattresses, and rubber dinghies in colors that did not exist on the shoreline ten years earlier. Aarons photographed the bay in 1968 from a terrace above and to the west, framing it vertically so that the Faraglioni close the top of the picture and the beach fills the bottom. A single sailing boat lies moored in the middle distance. Below it the jetty and the rocks are lined with sunbathers, and the shallows are so clear that the rock shelf is visible through the water. The lower half of the frame is dense with inflatables in orange, yellow, and pink, stacked among upturned wooden boats painted in the same bright colors. Aarons made no comment on any of it. He simply recorded what a fashionable Italian beach looked like in the summer of 1968, which is why the photograph now reads as social history as much as leisure photography. Slim Aarons (1916–2006) spent nearly five decades photographing international society for publications including LIFE, Town & Country, Holiday, and Travel + Leisure. A former World War II combat photographer, he turned after the war toward leisure, style, and the private worlds of actors, aristocrats, designers, and social figures. His 1974 book, A Wonderful Time, remains a landmark record of postwar glamour, while his photographs are now closely associated with the visual language of midcentury leisure and modernist design. For more than a decade, IFAC Arts has placed Slim Aarons photographs in private collections worldwide. More recently, IFAC worked directly with museum teams to facilitate Aarons' inclusion in two exhibitions: Pool Party: The Pool in American Art at the Mennello Museum of American Art in 2025, and Wide Expanse at Odunpazarı Modern Museum in Turkey in 2026. The Slim Aarons archive runs to thousands of photographs, only a fraction of which have been printed as estate editions. Dimensions are approximate and refer to the full paper size, including the white border, rather than the printed image area. The image area and border width may vary according to the photograph's original proportions and the selected print size. Unless otherwise specified, the print is supplied unframed; framed dimensions and pricing are available on request. Explore our curated Slim Aarons collection.
