About the Item

Unique Print Cyanotype on Arches Platine Paper Image size: 13.5 x 10.5 in., Frame size: 18.5 x 15 x 1.5 in. Signed, titled, and dated with location on verso From the series, Bluest Flos Artist Statement: "Historical contributions of women in the arts and sciences are often only known because they are linked to men. Thus is the case of Anna Atkins. A woman in her forties who amassed more than 6,000 prints of algae impressions in the span of ten years in the mid 1800’s only to be known as “Anonymous Author” in a publication written for The British Journal of Photography by 1889, just 18 years after her death. Years later, Larry Schaaf fortuitously found evidence of her cyanotypes through a statement written by W. Henry Fox Talbot of a “lady” and a prodigious set of prints. It was not until 1985 that Atkins was properly given credit for publishing the first photographic book, being one of the first female photographers and the first person to create a sustained body of work on one topic, solidifying her significant contribution to the birth of photography. This collection of work, Bluest flos*, is my way of breathing new light back into Anna’s life work – an obsession with flowers made visible through the cyanotype process. Each specimen represented here in these plates are those from Anna’s herbarium housed at the Natural History Museum of London. These flora were plucked, pressed, preserved, and given to the museum by Anna herself in 1865 to mark science, history and one woman’s possession and collection. In collaboration with John Hunnex, Curator, of the British and Irish Herbarium, I was given access to these flowering plants. I photographed and turned each specimen into a digital negative which were later arranged and reimagined into bouquets, forms and fields. All unique prints were made in Halstead, England, the home of Anna Atkins, and the place where she made her own prints 183 years ago -- using the same sun, water, and air. These impressions honor the everlasting agency of these flowers and the remarkable woman behind them. *Latin for flower; bloom" Meg Griffiths is an artist, educator, and the Co-Founder of A Yellow Rose Project. The wide arc of her work grapples with the various modes of domestic, cultural, and political engagement that structure female experience in the United States. Her inquiries are driven by a desire to capture, develop and share a closer understanding of (self-identifying) female subjects. Each project she creates, whether individual or collaborative, focused on the personal or the collective, are at heart about the intrinsic connection between self and other, between interiority and positionality, as much as kinship and community. Her work has traveled nationally as well as internationally, and is placed in collections such as Center for Creative Photography, Capital One, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Her book projects, both monographs and collaborative projects, have been acquired by various institutions around the country such as the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University Library, Duke University Library, Princeton University Firestone Library, The Getty Research Institute, Zentralbibliothek Zürich to name a few. She currently lives in Denton, Texas where she is an Associate Professor of Photography in the Visual Arts Division at Texas Woman’s University.
