About the Item

A woman in a black dress lies on her back in a patch of grass, reaching toward the branches hanging above her. Hadley achieves the bokeh effect which extends past the picture plane, inviting viewers into a dreamy landscape of endless possibility. Hadley's "Reaching for the Stars" is a 16 x 21 inch archival pigment print and is part of her "Story Lines" series. The work is handprinted by the artist on archival paper and is signed and numbered on the back. Sarah Hadley focuses on issues of female identity and memory throughout her narrative work. The LA-based photographer studied photography at Georgetown and Corcoran College of Art in Washington. Her work is held in museums, corporate & private collections, and has been published in ELLE Italia, L’Oeil de la Photographie, Photo District News (PDN), The Oxford American, B&W Magazine, Harper’s, SHOTS, Lenscratch and The Sun.

Statement: This image of What I Remember is from Sarah Hadley's series Story Lines, which explores the female interior landscape. The series was inspired by the French New Wave films of the 60’s, which were shot in black and white on the street and which often portrayed the subconscious thoughts and feelings of ordinary women. These photo collages pay homage to the surrealists who first employed the technique of conjoining unrelated images to create startling and thought-provoking connections. Using backdrops...
