About the Item

These are branches from the native Californian bay laurel tree in my garden. I deliberately chose curving branches for the most interesting lines in my composition. I essentially “draw” my monotypes using the silhouette of each branch and leaf—or blade of wild grass— and spend more time arranging the composition than I do exposing and rinsing the sun print. My botanical cyanotypes are each one-of-a-kind slow cameraless photographs made outdoors using natural light. There is no lens and there is no etched plate or printing press. This is a double-exposure cyanotype, which means that the two differently colored areas of the photo-sensitive paper were exposed for two different amounts of time, creating the varying shades of blue rather than a solid white silhouette against a dark blue background as in traditional cyanotypes. Every botanical cyanotype I make is a unique monotype. There is no way to reproduce exactly the same image even if I keep the same plant cuttings to use in a series before they wilt. There is no carved block nor etched copper plate—only the sun causing the photo chemicals to darken every second that it remains exposed to light.

Though this unique monotype looks like a woodcut or linocut, it is not. This is a cyanotype, a kind of lensless photography dating back to the 1800s, but the artist altered the ratio...

The cyanotype (a.k.a. sun-print) process is one of the oldest in the history of photography, dating back to the 1840's. Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun. Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative...
