About the Item

Known for her photographic portraits of interior spaces, Shani Mootoo reveals the curious and often emotive personal narratives of her subjects.  This giclee print on archival paper is editioned, 1/20. Mootoo writes: "My good friend David is a visual artist whose work deals with the phenomenon of collecting and with fictionalized archives. Half of the main living area David shares with his partner is dedicated to the display of many of the prized pieces in his vast collection of bones, skulls, found taxidermy specimens, and funerary accessories. What captivates me when I visit his home is how beautifully arranged these objects are, much like the more ordinary ornaments in any home-a vase of flowers, a ceramic sculpture, a blown glass bowl. David's pieces, which might otherwise be seen behind glass in a natural history museum, invite contemplation by their considered placement on tables, in corners, on shelves around other quotidian furniture and household items. When I look at David's arrangements I see the artist, the intellectual, the homemaker, the man who is curious and knows something about everything. These photos are part of a body of work that reflects on how people decorate their homes, how they physically place and show off what they have amassed. In photographing these collections, I create my own, with the camera becoming a net that captures and brings together a wall, or a table, or a bank of bookshelves into one compact space of the photograph. In this sense, my photographs of other's collections and decorations are my own way of collecting and cataloguing." Shani Mootoo is an accomplished writer, filmmaker, painter and photographer who has been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. She earned a BFA from the University of Western Ontario, and an MA in English from the University of Guelph. Her most recent novel, Polar Vortex, has been shortlisted for the 2020 Giller Prize. In her artworks, Mootoo explores the idea of dislocation, identity, belonging: “…identity, like perspective, is inevitably shifting and multi-faceted.” Mootoo's paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions locally and internationally, most notably at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Queen’s Museum in NYC, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, and at the Venice Biennale. Her videos include “English Lesson”, “Wild Woman in The Woods” and “Her Sweetness Lingers,” and have been screened in film and video festivals and art exhibitions locally and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Shani Mootoo was born in Ireland and raised in Trinidad. She lives in Canada.

The work is matted, framed. Unframed size is 21 x 31.5 inches. It is also available in two other sizes, 12 x 28 (framed 21 x 27 inches, edition of 10, $2,000); and 16 x 24 inches (25 x 33 inches framed, edition of 8, $2,600.). Mootoo describes how this image was created: "I was at my printer's studio working on a body of photographs when we were interrupted by a customer who needed his attention for a few minutes. I agreed on a pause so that that customer could be accommodated, and my printer suggested I roam the garden, as there was a lot to see there. Just before the exit to the garden was a room crammed with pastel knick-knacks. A glass sliding door stood closed between me and this room, which seemed to be a combination of very special private space and a storage room. I immediately had the sense that I was seeing a photograph waiting to be taken and, as I had my Sony Rx100m7 camera around my neck, I ran back to my printer and asked if I could go into the room. He generously said, 'By all means, go wherever you'd like".  On entering, there wasn't much room to negotiate, but I was struck by the carefully...

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado, Raghubir Singh...
