About the Item

Ed Ruscha’s “Drops” (1971) is a lithograph showcasing the stylized text characteristic of Ruscha's oeuvre, in which the word "Drops" appears to materialize out of water droplets, fusing the text with the thing it represents. It's a signature example of his conceptual wordplay language rendered as image, and an image collapsing into language. Printed and published by Cirrus Editions in Los Angeles, in a numbered edition of 90, it's catalogued as Engberg 54. Many impressions from 1971 are faded and in mediocre condition, but this impression retains strong color. Cirrus Editions was a Los Angeles print workshop central to the West Coast printmaking scene of the 1970s, and Ruscha's collaboration with them reflects his deep roots in L.A.'s art world. Ruscha has been an active printmaker since his student days at the Chouinard Art Institute in the late 1950s, and editioned multiples have remained a central part of his practice ever since. The artwork is signed, editioned and dated in pencil, lower left, "6/90 E. Ruscha 1971” with framed dimensions of 26 x 34 x 2 inches. Provenance: Private Collection Literature: Engberg 54
