About the Item

Etching on paper after the celebrated Rococo composition by François Boucher, depicting the goddess Diana in a moment of repose beside a woodland stream. The scene captures the sensuous elegance and pastoral charm for which Boucher became renowned, presenting the huntress goddess accompanied by a female attendant within an idyllic landscape setting. Executed with exceptional delicacy by Émile Médard, the print faithfully translates the painterly softness of the original into the linear language of engraving. Subtle tonal transitions, refined modelling of the figures, and richly textured foliage demonstrate the engraver’s technical accomplishment. The composition balances classical mythology with the intimate grace and decorative sophistication characteristic of the French Rococo tradition. Published in Vienna during the nineteenth century, this impression reflects the enduring popularity of Boucher’s oeuvre and the widespread demand for high-quality reproductive prints among collectors and connoisseurs. The elegant treatment of the nude figure, combined with the atmospheric landscape and masterful engraving technique, makes the work an appealing example of academic reproductive printmaking of the period. Condition: Good overall impression with clear detail and strong tonal range. Scattered foxing and age-related spotting visible throughout the margins and extending lightly into the image area. Minor toning consistent with age. Margins appear intact. François Boucher’s depictions of Diana rank among the most admired mythological subjects of the eighteenth century, exemplifying the artist’s ability to merge classical themes with the refined sensuality of the Rococo aesthetic.

His father, Jean-Marie Buland (1825-1895), was an engraver and his brother, Jean-Eugène (1852-1926), was a painter. Jean-Emile Buland studied under the painter Alexandre Cabanel and the engraver Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont. He won the 1st Grand Prix de Rome for engraving in 1880. He received a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition and a first-class medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1901. Antoine Calbet, born August 16, 1860 in Engayrac (Lot-et-Garonne) and died August 21, 1942 in Paris, was a French painter, watercolorist, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier by Édouard-Antoine Marsal (1845-1929), where he learned drawing, this draftsman and illustrator, a painter of nudes and romantic scenes, was sought after during his lifetime. He was then admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). He was a member of the Fine Arts admissions jury from 1913 to 1930. He began exhibiting in 1880 and became a member of the Society of French Artists. He was a friend of French President Armand Fallières. He received several medals at the Salon des Artistes Français and a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition for his work on a panel for the pavilion of the Ministry of Colonies. The French Society of Friends of the Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs.
