About the Item

Josef Albers (after) & Auguste Herbin Paris, 1975: Lithographic exhibition poster published in conjunction with a joint exhibition by Auguste Herbin & Josef Albers at Galerie Melki Paris during the winter of 1975. Lithographic poster. 22 x 33 inches. Very good overall condition with only some minor signs of handling. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Looks fantastic framed. Shipped securely from New York, NY. Josef Albers is best known for his seminal “Homage to the Square” series of the 1950s and '60s, which focused on the simplification of form and the interplay of shape and color. “Abstraction is real, probably more real than nature,” he once said. “I prefer to see with closed eyes.” His abstract canvases employed rigid geometric compositions in order to emphasize the optical effects set off by his chosen color palettes. Albers was highly influential as a teacher, first at the Bauhaus in Germany alongside Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, and later with posts at Black Mountain College, Yale, and Harvard; he taught courses in design and color theory, and counted among his students such iconic artists as Eva Hesse, Cy Twombly, Richard Anuszkiewicz, and Robert Rauschenberg. He is often cited among the progenitors of Minimalist, Conceptual, and Op art. Auguste Herbin (French 1882-1960) is known for abstract compositions in bright, buoyant colors, as well as being a cofounder of the abstract purist groups Abstraction-Création and Réalités Nouvelles in mid-century Paris. Herbin’s early career involved him working through many artistic influences, including postimpressionism, fauvism, cubism, and New Objectivism. His final abandonment of figurative painting came in 1927 after viewing microphotographs of crystals and plants, and he established Abstraction-Création as a refutation of figuration and surrealism. In 1942, Herbin created his “alphabet plastique,” a concept described in the book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif (1949) as a system relating color, shape, music notes, and letters. These forms became the language of his paintings, which he continued to create until his death in 1960, leaving his last work, entitled Fin, unfinished.
