About the Item

Peter Knapp’s “In a Whirl of Caprice Once Again” is a 18.25 x 14.5 inch color woodcut utilizing 5 woodblocks in black, green, purple, gold and blue on Okawara Japanese Paper. A Signature Member the Copley Society, Knapp’s abstract graphic print features sophisticated multi-block layering. "In a Whirl of Caprice Once Again" is a standout iteration in Peter Knapp’s printmaking practice, achieving a dense, prismatic effect. In addition to the black key block and the layered green and purple tones found in the series, this version introduces a fifth accent block in gold and blue, adding an energetic vibration to the surface. Printed in 2022 at First Proof Press in Brattleboro, Vermont, this 1/5 edition represents the height of Knapp’s collaborative technical efforts. The choice of Okawara Japanese Paper provides a traditional, archival foundation for the contemporary, energetic composition. Matted behind plexiglass and housed in a 27 x 23 x 1 inch walnut finish frame, the work is a playful but disciplined investigation into color theory and relief texture. Titled and signed by the artist. Knapp is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.

Marjorie Shaw Kubach (American), "Untitled: Yellow, Green & Black Lithograph, Abstract Lithograph signed in Pencil, 26 x 19, Late 20th Century Colors: Yellow, Green, Black Allen Kubach and Marjorie Shaw Kubach were two married artists who explored their artistic styles together throughout their careers. The artists showed their works largely throughout New Jersey and New York, sometimes joining together for the same exhibits. The works that Detour Gallery has acquired are representative of the pair’s time in which they explored abstraction. These works were made in a postwar era, following the art world’s shifted focus on New York as the center for new modern art. Art at this time was evolving, and the experimentation of abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, and minimalism evidently paved the path for later artists such as Allen and Marjorie. As noted in the New York Times by Vivian Reynor, Allen Kubach “specializes in strong colors, expressing them in vertical and diagonal grids laid one on top of another.” In such a manner, Allan reflects these contemporary ideals that were taking New York by storm in the 1960’s and 70’s. The linear focus and non objective use of color found in Allen’s work correlates to that of the pioneers of abstract and minimalistic work such as Sol Le Witt...
