About the Item

The work is a Lithograph, not numbered, but signed and dated by the artist, Piero Dorazio. The print has an intense color field with a strong linear element being composed of quadrilateral shapes that vary in size thus producing a kinetic energy that causes the composition to float and twist in the visual space. Dorazio was was an Italian painter. His work was related to color field painting, lyrical abstraction and other forms of abstract art. He initially studied architecture, but was soon influenced by “Futurists” painters: Gino Severini, Antonio Corpora, Enrico Prampolini and Giacombo Balla. Their right-wing views caused him to align himself with a more left-leaning group of artists, Renato Guttuso, Pietro Consagra, Achille Perilli and Giulio Turcato. Along with these latter artists he formulated a manifesto ffor the group of artists under the heading of “Forma I.” From 1947 on through the early 1950s Dorazio was active in France and Italy and began winning prizes for his work in addition to opening a gallery. In 1953 he travelled for the first time to the United States to participate in the International Summer Seminar at Harvard University. In the fall he moved to New York City and stayed for a year. Interesting to note that he developed a rather hopeful philosophy with respect to abstract art and put forth his ideas in the book, La Frantasia Dell-Arte Nella Vita Moderna, in 1955. The reviewer Christopher Masters states that Dorazio advanced his belief, perhaps with a surfeit of optimism, that “abstract art could change the world…that just as science and technology were destroying the barriers between different cultures, so the new ‘universal style’ would lead to a ‘universal civilization.’ He taught for a year at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design and returned there each summer for the next ten years to teach. In 1974 he moved his studio from Rome to Umbria where he continued to live and work. Dorazio has been described as an “outspoken, independent character” who was the opposite of politically correct. He was mostly known for paintings with thick bands of bright color and crosshatched grids and his colors and method stayed constant over time. While abstract, his paintings do not neglect detail or complexity. His style is in line with what Clement Greenberg, art critic, later described as “Post-painterly abstraction.” His work has been in exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. Unframed the piece measures: 34 x 24
