Tamar Halpern A Public Service Announcement , 2008 Signed and dated on verso Inkjet print 127.0 x 101.6 cm Tamar Halpern is a photographer whose subject is the photographic process as much as the objects captured in her images. She uses a variety of photographic technologies, both contemporary and historic, and her final prints are the result of elaborate processes involving repeated cycles of digital and manual alteration: scanning, re-photographing, printing, sponging, taping, silk-screening, and wiping. The objects in the images are frequently commonplace, and also include streetscapes and interior views. In the final images, however, the original subject is sometimes distorted and obscured beyond recognition. Halpern’s style favors dense layering of images, high contrast, texture, and saturated colors.
