Original 1918 WWI French Poster by Maurice Romberg - Compagnie Algérienne Liberation Loan, linen-backed, Grade A- This exceptional and authentic 1918 vintage lithograph is a large-format French propaganda poster commissioned by the Compagnie Algérienne to promote the Emprunt de la Libération (National Liberation Loan). Illustrated by the renowned artist Maurice Romberg, the piece is a vivid historical document of the final year of World War I. The poster features a striking depiction of an Algerian "Spahi," or cavalryman, mounted on a spirited horse, symbolizing the strength and loyalty of France's North African territories. Romberg, celebrated for his Orientalist style, captures the rider's movement and dignity with masterful draftsmanship. The vibrant color palette and bold typography—"Souscrivez" (Subscribe)—remain as impactful today as they were over a century ago. Maurice Romberg (1861/62–1943): Maurice Romberg de Vaucorbeil was a distinguished French artist and illustrator, best known for his vivid depictions of North African life and his contributions to military and financial propaganda during World War I. Born in the early 1860s, he became a prominent figure in the Orientalist movement, an artistic style focused on the cultures and landscapes of the Near East and North Africa.
