XXXVII, p. 332 Copper engraving, 1771 edition This finely executed copper engraving presents a detailed anatomical study of the membranous surface of a bat’s wing, shown in close vertical section. The composition isolates the elongated, tapering form of the patagium, rendered with meticulous, repetitive scale-like texturing that conveys both structural density and tactile surface quality. The upper margin suggests the transition from furred body to membranous extension, highlighting the anatomical contrast between hair-covered torso and scaled wing membrane. The engraver employs tight, rhythmic linework and subtle cross-hatching to articulate volume and surface variation, creating a highly graphic yet scientifically precise image. Lettered references (A, B, C) correspond to Buffon’s explanatory text, reinforcing the plate’s didactic function within the broader zoological study of chiropterans.
