Héliogravure on paper, table from the suite "Les Sataniques". Not signed nor numbered, as issued. A compelling print after one of Félicien Rops' most celebrated Symbolist compositions, depicting a winged demonic figure soaring through a turbulent nocturnal sky while brandishing a flaming torch. The dramatic image embodies the fascination with Satanic imagery, eroticism, and psychological tension that established Rops as one of the most original and provocative artists of the nineteenth century. Executed with rich tonal gradations, the print faithfully reproduces the atmospheric qualities of the original drawing, emphasizing the contrast between deep shadows and luminous highlights. The dynamic spiral composition, the muscular anatomy of the infernal protagonist, and the expressive treatment of the storm-filled sky reveal the artist's extraordinary ability to fuse Romantic imagination with the emerging Symbolist sensibility. Rather than illustrating a literal narrative, the work evokes themes of temptation, spiritual conflict, and the darker impulses of human nature, subjects that occupied a central place throughout Rops' mature career. Inscribed in the lower right margin "Le Satanique – L'Envoûtement", the composition belongs to the celebrated cycle Les Sataniques, one of the artist's most influential bodies of work. Good overall condition with a strong, well-preserved impression. Minor age-related toning to the margins and light handling wear consistent with age. The image remains clean with good tonal contrast. Félicien Rops occupies a pivotal position in European Symbolism. Closely associated with the literary circles of Charles Baudelaire, Joris-Karl Huysmans, and the Decadent movement, his graphic works combine exceptional technical mastery with a deeply personal iconography. The Les Sataniques series remains among his most sought-after productions, admired for its psychological intensity, imaginative power, and lasting influence on modern graphic art.
