Complete and homogeneous series of 18 plates (black and white etching and aquatint), in loose sheets, of the second edition of the famous work by Goya (1746-1828), edited in 1875 by the Real Academia of Fine Arts in San Fernando, Madrid. Rare edition printed in a very few copies, many of which without frontispiece like this one. Beautiful impressions with very fresh and bright ink and wide margins. Very small traces of foxing on the margins, with holes of biding sealed. All the different editions of “Proverbios” were posthumous, having been printed since 1864. Image dimensions: 24.5 x 35 cm Los Proverbios (The Proverbs), also known as Los Disparates (The Follies), is a very enigmatic portfolio of eighteen prints (aquatint and etching, with retouching in drypoint and burin), still studied even today: the last major series etched by Goya and very difficult to explain. The dark and complex compositions have charmed many interpreters and inspired many political commentaries and satires, traditional proverbs and the Spanish carnival. Four works were added later in the last years of the artist’s life. Reference: Harris, 248/265. The collection includes Ν. 1: Disparate femenino (Feminine folly) Ν. 2: Disparate de miedo (Fearful folly), Ν. 3: Disparate ridiculo (Ridiculous folly), Ν. 4: Bobalicón (Simpleton's folly), Ν. 5: Disparate volante (Flying folly), Ν. 6: Disparate furioso (Furious folly), Ν. 7: Disparate matrimonial (Matrimonial folly), Ν. 8: Los ensacados (Folly in sacks), Ν. 9: Disparate general (General folly), Ν. 10: El caballo raptor (Kidnapping horse), Ν. 11: Disparate pobre (Poor folly), Ν. 12: Disparate alegre (Merry folly), Ν. 13: Modo de volar (A way of flying), Ν. 14: Disparate de carnaval (Carnaval folly), Ν. 15: Disparate claro (Clear folly), Ν. 16: Las exhortaciones (Clear folly), Ν. 17: La lealtad (Loyalty), Ν. 18: Disparate fúnebre (Funereal folly). This artwork is shipped from Italy.
