About the Item

"Sister Water" - St Francis of Assisi Linocut Wood Black pring of St Francis by Italian artist (printer of Assisi) Gastone Vignati (Italian, 20C) St Francis of Assisi Linocut depicting St. Francis as the focal point, standing in front of a waterfall, with flowers beneath him and three birds in the sky above him. St Francis is wearing a white hooded robe and a rope belt while he holds both of his hands in the air, with his face looking up towards the waterfall. From the Canticle of the Creatures by St. Francis of Assisi. Titled "Sorella Cascada" (Italian) meaning "Sister Waterfall" lower left. Signed "Vignati" lower right. Stamped lower right corner. Presented in a dark wood frame. Image: 18.5"H x 14.5"W Mat size: 16"H x 12"W Paper size: 13.5"H x 9.5"W Over eighty years old, Gastone Vignati is a retired printer now doing what he loves: lineoleum-block prints of “the city I so love, my Assisi”. As a young boy, Vignati worked alongside his father in the family print shop as his father had once done with his father. Pino and I came to the Assisi in the mid’1970’s and I still remember the print shop near the main square with the noise of all the machines, the smell of ink. Signor Vignati might have been working there then but I only have a vague memory of him. He probably looked much as he does today: no wrinkles yet in his face. Type-set of the Vignati family, over 100 years old When you are walking along the Via San Francesco, do stop in at the Arte Stampa (“art of printing”) shop. If Signor Vignati is there, he will proudly show you the presses and the type-set which have been in the family for over one hundred years. He might even show you how he creates his linoleum-block prints.

St. Simon from Les Grands Apôtres Debout Original 17th Century Etching

St. Simon from Les Grands Apôtres Debout Original 17th Century Etching

By Jacques Callot

Located in Soquel, CA

St. Simon from "Les Grands Apôtres Debout, Représentant Le Sauveur, La Bienheureuse Marie et Les Saints Apôtres" Original 17th Century Etching by Jacques Callot. This portrait of St. Simon depicts him standing in a street, holding a book and leaning on a saw. The saw is typical of St. Simon's depictions as he was said to have been martyred by being sawed in half. Very good impression of this print, with bold lines and high contrast. This leaflet contains the words "Callot fec." in the bottom right, shorthand for the Latin fecit, meaning Callot made this. This edition contains no publishers mark or numbering on the piece, indicating that it is from the first printing state. Jacques Callot was born in the Duchy of Lorraine around 1592 to an important family in the court. He started an apprenticeship as a goldsmith at the age of 15, but later began learning etching. He is known for his technical skill in etching and for developing the echoppe style etching needle. Callot's etchings featured religious figures as well as soldiers, common people, beggars, and court individuals. His series "The Miseries and Misfortunes of War," published while Lorraine was invaded during the Thirty Years War, later influenced Goya's "Los Desastres de la Guerra...

Jacob Steinhardt Woodcut Print "Rachel Weeping For Her Children" Signed Numbered

By Jacob Steinhardt

Located in Detroit, MI

“A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” This verse from Jeremiah 31:15 is the subject of this woodcut print by Jacob Steinhardt, depicting Rachel, who was the mother of the tribes of Joshua and Benjamin, and who was the wife of Jacob who was Israel, weeping for her children which is to be understood as after the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, the Israelites were clustered into Ramah, the home of the Benjaminites, before being taken into the Babylonian captivity; Rachel is weeping for the destruction and expulsion of her descendants. This work is exemplary of the Jewish themes of Jacob Steinhardt, a German Jew...
