About the Item

Etching on laid paper Signed in plate lower left: Justin Gabriel Published by Cadart & Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin In La Petite Venise (Provence), Justin Gabriel captures the poetic charm of a Provençal harbor, where houses with irregular façades rise directly from the water’s edge and fishermen go about their daily tasks in moored boats. The etching evokes the atmosphere of a Mediterranean fishing village — a world of light, water, and work — rendered with a precision that conveys both topographical accuracy and lyrical mood. Gabriel’s treatment of architecture and reflections demonstrates his skill in balancing detailed observation with compositional harmony. The play of shadow along the façades and the subtle gradation of tone in the sky give the scene an almost painterly depth. This etching stands as a testament to the artist’s mastery of the medium, merging the natural poetry of southern France with the technical rigor celebrated by the Société des Aquafortistes. Fine impression on laid paper, with broad margins. Slight foxing and time toning typical of age, otherwise excellent preservation. La Petite Venise was among the etchings published by Cadart & Luquet as part of their mission to promote original prints by leading 19th-century artists. Justin Gabriel’s work — though relatively rare — reflects the influence of both the Barbizon landscape tradition and the southern regionalism that would later inspire the Provençal school. His interpretation of light and water here aligns him with contemporaries like Lalanne and Appian, whose works likewise elevated landscape etching to the level of fine art.
