Tom. X, Pl. XI, p. 50. From Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière. Paris, 1771. Etching and engraving on laid paper. Sheet size: 24.5 × 19.5 cm. A finely executed anatomical plate depicting the principal thoracic organs in situ. The composition presents a detailed study of the lungs flanking the heart and major vessels, with the trachea prominently rendered above. The organs are carefully delineated with subtle parallel hatching to suggest volume and surface texture, while lettered references (A–F and others) correspond to explanatory passages in the accompanying text. The engraving exemplifies the clarity and precision characteristic of 18th-century scientific illustration, balancing anatomical accuracy with refined linework. The restrained, isolated presentation of the organs against a plain ground emphasizes structural relationships and reflects Enlightenment advances in comparative anatomy and physiology within Buffon’s monumental natural history. Upper margin inscribed “Tom. X.” and “Pl. XI. Pag. 50.” Lower margin signed in the plate “Buvée Lanquarain del.” and “Baron sculp.” Printed on period laid paper with visible plate mark. Condition: Very good, with light uniform age toning and a faint central vertical fold from early binding; minor marginal handling and occasional light spotting consistent with age.
