About the Item

Tom. X, Pl. XXIII, p. 114. From Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière. Paris, 1771. Etching and engraving on laid paper. Sheet size: 24.5 × 19.5 cm. A finely executed zoological plate depicting a flying squirrel shown in full ventral extension, the patagium fully outspread between fore and hind limbs. The specimen is rendered symmetrically from below, revealing the lighter underfur, abdominal anatomy, and reproductive details, with alphabetical letters corresponding to Buffon’s descriptive text. The engraving is characterized by delicate and disciplined hatching, creating subtle tonal gradations that define musculature, fur direction, and the soft membrane of the gliding skin. The compositional clarity—centralized, isolated against a blank ground—is emblematic of Enlightenment scientific illustration, privileging anatomical precision over decorative embellishment. Upper margin inscribed “Tom. X.” and “Pl. XXIII. Pag. 114.” Lower margin signed in the plate “Buvée l’Américain delin.” and “Menil sculp.” A strong, well-defined plate mark visible. Printed on period laid paper. Condition: Very good, with light age toning and a faint vertical center fold from original binding. Minor scattered foxing and a small ink speck in the upper left margin, not affecting the image. Impression clear and sharp, with excellent preservation of fine line work.
