About the Item

The present color collagraph, from the portfolio 'Los Animales,' is an excellent example of Joseph Rozman's pictographic style. Rozman's work often looks to ancient and non-western artistic idioms for inspiration, and in this portfolio he looks especially to the stone carving and written language of the Mayans. In this print, a stylized image of a white deer is framed by ambiguous green symbols against a field of maroon. Below, figures dance and writhe in a field of brown. 14.75 x 11.19 inches, artwork 18 x 21.5 inches, frame Signed and dated in pencil, lower right Entitled in pencil, lower center Edition 9/10 in pencil, lower left Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting; housed in a rounded cream frame. Artwork in overall excellent condition; linear impression upper right original to print. Joseph Rozman (b. 1944, Milwaukee, WI) received his BFA and MFA from UW-Milwaukee by 1969, and would later become a Professor at Mount Mary College. His style is a spontaneous merging of ancient art with Modernist concerns: like Paul Klee and Adolph Gottlieb, his compositions are dominated by pictographs and symbols, drawing influence from Ancient Egyptian styles and prehistoric rock art. His approach to painting likewise falls in the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, with his free experimentation with varied materials and processes, and his delight in color and texture. Caring the credo of "Art is Fun" Rozman's playful gestures recur in his richly diverse works.
