About the Item

A significant aquatint by Picasso, ‘Femme au Fauteuil’ demonstrates the artist's mastery of a technique pioneered by Goya in his revolutionary printmaking practice. The aquatint medium, which creates tonal depth through acid-bitten copper plates, allowed Picasso to achieve atmospheric effects impossible in line etching alone, positioning him alongside the Spanish Old Master in technical ambition and innovation. The seated female figure embodies Picasso's sustained engagement with classical poses of repose and contemplation. Throughout his career, the woman in an armchair became a recurring motif through which Picasso explored formal arrangement, spatial relationships, and the interplay between figure and domestic interior. These seated poses, rooted in Renaissance and Old Master precedent, allowed him to investigate the female body as both psychological subject and formal composition. What distinguishes this 1939 aquatint is its documentation of Picasso's experimental rigor at a moment when most of his contemporaries relied solely on lithography and conventional printmaking methods. While other artists adhered to traditional approaches, Picasso pushed relentlessly into hybrid techniques, combining etching, drypoint, and aquatint on a single plate to expand the expressive possibilities of the print medium. The artwork is edition 32/50. It is signed lower right, “Picasso” with framed dimensions 25 x 22 x 1/2 inches. Provenance: Private Collection, California
