Pablo Picasso, a Spanish painter credited with nearly single-handedly creating modern art, is perhaps the most famous artist of the twentieth century. His illustrious career spanning 75 years produced thousands of works, including paintings, sculptures, prints, and ceramics composed of all kinds of materials. Picasso was born in 1881 in Málaga, Spain. The son of an academic painter, José Ruiz Blasco, he began to draw at an early age, a talent that he nurtured at La Lonja, the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Crucial to his artistic development in those early years, too, were his visit to Horta de Ebro, and his association with the group at the café Els Quatre Gats. Picasso’s first exhibition took place in Barcelona in 1900, and after a series of trips to France, he settled in Paris in 1904. Here, Picasso began a career defined by constant transformation, rapidly developing his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical new idea, and it might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes. His circle of friends soon included Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob, Gertrude and Leo Stein, as well as two dealers, Ambroise Vollard and Berthe Weill. His style began with the Blue Period (1901–04), then developed to the Rose Period (1905), which saw the pivotal work Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907). It was soon thereafter that Picasso first became famous for his pioneering role in Cubism, the inspiration of which came from a confluence of influences – from Paul Cézanne and Henri Rousseau, to archaic and tribal art. His innovations in this movement would have far-reaching consequences for practically all of modern art. In the late 1920s, Picasso become involved to a certain degree with the Surrealists. The encounter, while never transforming his work entirely, encouraged not only the soft forms and tender eroticism of portraits of his mistress Marie-Therese Walter, but also the starkly angular imagery of Guernica (1937), the century's most famous anti-war painting. It was in the early 1930s that Picasso became interested in sculpture, and by 1932, with large exhibitions at the Galeries Georges Petit, Paris, and the Kunsthaus Zürich, and the publication of the first volume of Christian Zervos’s ‘Catalogue Raisonné,’ Picasso’s fame had been cemented. In 1944, Picasso became associated with the French Communist Party, and in 1949 donated a painting to the Soviet-backed World Peace Congress. This would become one of his most famous paintings, ‘The Dove of Peace.” It was also telling of a new phase in Picasso’s art – the power of simplicity. As he matured, Picasso became ever more conscious of assuring his legacy, and his late work is characterized by a frank dialogue with Old Masters such as Ingres, Velazquez, Goya, and Rembrandt. Picasso was remarkably prolific, His total artistic work numbering close to 50,000. Among the enormous number of exhibitions that were held during the artist’s lifetime, those at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris were most significant. In 1961, the artist married Jacqueline Roque, and the two spent the remainder of their days in Mougins. Picasso continued to create until he died in 1973, at the age of 91. No artist in the twentieth century has had as profound an effect on art, and the world, as Pablo Picasso.
