About the Item

Original Etching. "Portrait du Peintre A. Guillaumin au Pendu" by Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906). Etching on archival paper, 1873. A good impression of the rare First State (of two), clearly identified by the presence of the remarque (a small, separate sketch) of a hanged man in the upper left corner, before the reduction of the plate. The print is a portrait of Cézanne's close friend, the Impressionist painter Armand Guillaumin, depicted sitting with his arms crossed. The "hanged man" in the corner is a direct reference to Cézanne's own famous painting from the same year, La Maison du pendu (House of the Hanged Man), which was shown at the First Impressionist Exhibition. Printed on a heavy, soft, cream wove rag paper with a pronounced plate mark and a lightly textured surface. Dimensions: Sight size 7.5 inches high by 5.5 inches wide. Overall framed size is 12.75 by 9.75 inches. Under glass. Not examined out of frame. Provenance: A Long Island, New York gentleman Paul Cézanne French, 1839–1906 Paul Cézanne’s energetic, distorted paintings and drawings helped pave the way for modernism and 20th-century art at large. Across radiant landscapes, intense portraits, and complex still lifes, the Post-Impressionist perfected a style that used vivid color palettes and sensitively layered brushstrokes of varying thicknesses to create a sense of dimension across the picture plane. Cézanne’s most famous compositions feature apples, card players, and the landscape of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which he could see from his window in Provence, France. His experiments with form and materiality were particularly influential for Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee. Cézanne’s work belongs in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
