About the Item

‘L'Enfant au biscuit’ portrays Renoir's son Jean Renoir, who later became a major filmmaker of the twentieth century, directing ‘La Grande Illusion’ and ‘La Règle du jeu.’ This lithograph is based on a pastel Renoir drew in 1895, depicting the child seated in an armchair with a rattle and a biscuit, but with a tightened composition, removing the surrounding domestic setting present in the pastel. The work was commissioned by dealer, Ambroise Vollard and printed by master lithographer Auguste Clot for a planned third album of original prints from the Vollard Gallery, which translated Renoir's pastel technique into color lithography, however, the project was ultimately abandoned. Executed on Ingres d'Arches paper, circa 1898, single state, ‘L'Enfant au biscuit’ epresents one of only 29 lithographs Renoir produced in a printmaking career spanning roughly two decades. The framed dimensions are 27 x 21 x 1 1/4 inches.

An intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris.
