About the Item

A fabulous pair of early, coloured oleographs, originating from India. Oleographs are chromo lithographs that have been coloured to look like oil paintings. In the case of these two, early 20th century prints, the depth of colour is rich and opulent. There is a sense of the quality of the production of each of the artworks, heightened by the fact that they appear to be in their original frames. The two images make more than a nod to popular culture In India around the 1920's. They transport us to Bombay and a time when the theatre was an important space for getting across messages to the public at large. Both of these beautifully fresh images display a degree of theatricality to the extent that the viewer could understand the image in terms of a stage set complete with backdrops and costumes. It was an ideology that could be easily grasped by all. Both pieces by Chonker Art Studio, Bombay. The prints measure 40cm x 52cm with the frames and are c 1920's. They have their registration numbers. They are in thin wooden frames that are painted black. Sarva-Vyapak. In its original frame. the piece is in overall good condition. However there are signs of foxing and some creasing. Whilst this does not affect the overall feel of the print it would be worthwhile taking out of the frame, lightly cleaning by a picture restorer and putting in an acid free backboard. This is a simple task. Rang-Holi. Again in its original frame and could also do with taking out of the frame, lightly cleaning by a picture restorer and putting in an acid free backboard This piece has vertical creasing through the print. Again to my eye this only adds to the feel of the piece and does not detract from the quality. These two oleograph prints are antiques and show signs of their age as would be expected from original works. Many of these early prints did not survive due to the climate conditions in India. The modern copies do not hold the same depth of colour as these wonderful early original prints.
