About the Item

A collabroation between Sir William Hamilton & Pietro Fabris Naples: Pietro Fabris, 1776. Engraving with hand coloring in gouache and watercolor on 18th century laid paper with an indiscernible watermark, and a central fold, as issued, 11 1/4 x 14 (285 x 351 mm); sheet 14 3/4 x 17 4/3 inches (375 x 451 mm), full margins. With the Sidney Z. Lucas (Lucas Gallery, New York) ink stamp (not in Lugt) in black ink in the upper right corner on the verso. With scattered light surface soiling, minor toning and soft handling wear, all consistent with age and unobtrusive. On the verso is a strip of paper transfer along the right sheet edge. Colors remain saturated and fresh. Sir William Hamilton was the British Envoy to the Kingdom of Naples, and Pietro Fabris (Peter Fabris), was an Anglo-Italian painter who worked closely with Hamilton. In their collaborative prints Sir William Hamilton often appears as a figure in a red coat (seen in the foreground on horseback), while the artist Pietro Fabris often depicts himself in blue (likely the mounted figure to his right). The Campi Phlegraei was a groundbreaking geological study. Hamilton spent years observing the volcanic activity around Naples, and he commissioned Fabris to create these "illuminated" plates to provide the Royal Society in London with an accurate visual record. The "Forum Vulcani" plate specifically captures the morales (steam vents) and the extraction of sulfur and alum, which were major local industries at the time.
