About the Item

Lithograph on paper realized in 1862. Hand colored. The artwork belongs to the Suite Uses and customs of all the peoples of the universe: " History of the government, of the laws, of the militia, of the religion of all the nations from the most remote times up to the present day". This finely executed hand-coloured lithograph presents a carefully staged group of male and female figures dressed in formal court attire of the seventeenth century. Set within an elegant architectural interior defined by classical columns and drapery, the composition juxtaposes aristocratic men and women in richly detailed garments, illustrating the refinement and hierarchy of Baroque-era dress. The figures are rendered with particular attention to costume: women wear voluminous gowns with structured bodices, lace ruffs, jeweled ornaments, and elaborate coiffures, while the men are depicted in tailored doublets, cloaks, breeches, and boots, some bearing swords or gloves as markers of status. The restrained yet luminous hand-colouring enhances the visual richness of the fabrics—velvets, silks, and brocades—without overwhelming the delicacy of the engraved line. Inscribed below with the title Costumi del Secolo XVII, the print belongs to the long tradition of costume plates produced in Italy during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, intended both as historical documentation and as visual reference for artists, scholars, and collectors.
