About the Item

Polychrome woodblock print (nishiki-e). A finely executed ukiyo-e print depicting two kabuki actors caught in a moment of heightened dramatic tension, shown within a richly patterned interior setting. The protagonists are rendered in dynamic poses, their bodies twisting and leaning forward as if mid-movement, conveying urgency and theatrical intensity. Their expressive facial features, exaggerated gestures, and elaborate costumes are characteristic of kabuki actor portraiture of the late Edo period. The composition is framed by architectural elements and textile motifs, creating a shallow pictorial space that heightens the sense of immediacy. Above the scene, large calligraphic cartouches with bold kanji dominate the upper register, likely identifying the play, roles, or scene, while additional inscriptions appear along the right margin. The vivid yet controlled palette—featuring deep blacks, indigo blues, muted greens, and warm flesh tones—demonstrates the mature refinement of Edo-period color printing. Stylistically, the work aligns closely with the oeuvre of Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III), the most prolific and influential ukiyo-e designer of actor prints in the 19th century. The expressive physiognomies, rhythmic line work, and theatrical staging are hallmarks of Kunisada’s kabuki compositions from the 1830s–1850s. The format, subject matter, and calligraphic treatment strongly support an attribution to his circle, if not to the master himself. Condition: Overall good condition, with expected age-related wear, light toning, and minor handling marks consistent with Edo-period woodblock prints.
