Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Hiroshige (Edo, 1797-1858) When it comes to ukiyo-e artists there are not many legendary names like Utagawa Hiroshige. Born in 1797, the iconic master of woodblock prints became famous thanks to his extraordinary landscape paintings. Student of Utagawa Toyohiro (ca. 1773-1829), he studied the Western-style introduced by the founder of the Utagawa school Toyoharu (1735-1814). Together with Hokusai, he is considered one of the leading Japanese landscape painters of the nineteenth century and one of the most famous representatives of the Ukiyo-e art movement. With an immense artistic production that counts more than 400 engravings of actors, warriors, courtesans, and above all naturalistic landscapes, Hiroshige placed at the center of his research the contemplation of nature and its representation in a morphologically harmonic key: the human feeling linked to religion whilst listening to nature and to the breath of the cosmos. His most famous series is The 100 Famous Edo Views. Hiroshige extraordinarily influenced European painting of the late nineteenth century, especially Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, including artists like Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh.

An exceptionally crisp image with fresh color, printed on traditional Washi paper and showing delicate bokashi gradation of sumi ink in the foreground, horizon and upper sky. Sheet Dimensions: 10.25 H x 15.25 W inches. Travelers pass through a section of the Kanagawa post station, dominated by a variety of shops, each with views looking out over the water.
