Vivian Stanshall (1943–1995) Strange Company Etching Signed 'Vivian' on the reverse Strange Company is a rare and compelling etching by Vivian Stanshall, showcasing the inventive imagination and eccentric visual language for which he became renowned. Rich in character and atmosphere, the composition presents a pair of enigmatic figures rendered with wit, psychological complexity, and a distinctly surreal sensibility. The work reflects Stanshall's fascination with the absurd, the theatrical, and the richly populated worlds that inhabited both his visual and literary creations. Best known as the visionary frontman of the avant-garde rock group Vivian Stanshall, Stanshall was also an accomplished visual artist whose output encompassed drawing, printmaking, painting, and design. Across all disciplines, he demonstrated a singular ability to blend humour, fantasy, and acute observation, creating works that remain immediately recognisable and deeply individual. Of particular significance is the rarity of this impression. Strange Company originates from an uneditioned group of etchings, with only four or five examples believed to exist. As such, it represents an exceptionally scarce example of Stanshall's graphic work, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire a print from one of Britain's most original and multifaceted creative figures. The work further benefits from impeccable provenance, having come directly from the artist's estate and subsequently descended through the family.
