About the Item

Etching on paper. Inscribed in the plate (upper right): Rehn sc. Not signed. Circa first quarter of the 20th century. A powerful and psychologically charged etching by Walter Richard Rehn, executed in a dense network of cross-hatched lines that exemplify the artist’s mastery of tonal contrast and dramatic chiaroscuro. The composition depicts a tense interior scene dominated by a monumental standing figure, rendered with vigorous, agitated strokes, confronting a smaller, crouched or fallen figure in the foreground. The spatial compression, steep diagonals, and heavy shadows heighten the sense of unease and emotional intensity. Rehn’s handling of the etched line—alternating between frenetic, almost scratched passages and areas of stark luminosity—reveals his close engagement with Symbolism and early Expressionism. The work reflects the artist’s sustained interest in existential themes, moral conflict, and human vulnerability, subjects that recur throughout his graphic oeuvre. The dramatic lighting and fractured forms recall contemporary German printmakers associated with the Munich and Berlin Secession movements, while maintaining Rehn’s distinctly personal visual language. Printed on wove paper with wide margins, showing the platemark. Condition: Generally good, with light, even toning to the sheet and minor handling marks consistent with age; the image itself well preserved with strong contrasts. This etching stands as a compelling example of Rehn’s graphic production and illustrates his ability to convey narrative tension and psychological depth through the expressive potential of the etched line.
